Notable Former Vehicles:

Pictured March 2015

- 3.0L (181 c.i.) Duratec V6, 24V DOHC, 200 hp @ 5750 rpm, 200 ft-lb @ 4500 rpm
- >157k miles, daily driver, engine ran like new when retired
- Michigan car, underside rusted pretty badly
- Repairs by me: Left rear door drunk driver dent (Feb. 2012), both rear brake lines, radiator hose, rear defroster, and many zip ties
- Dad bought it new prior to my beginning of pre-school (Aug. 10, 1999), ignition died days before university graduation (Apr. 19, 2017). I remember the day we bought it, learned the basics of car maintenance with it, first car I ever drove, got my driver's license with it. Emotional value >> actual value
- Retired since one thing after another had been going wrong; ironically, none of the things we thought were on their way out (transmission, brake lines, structural integrity of undercarriage) had actually failed yet.

Pictured March 2017

I rode this one fairly often.  My any-weather, any-time, ain't-care beater that lived outside.
- Dying bike that I got for free and resurrected with junk parts that ran for a long time. 700c Matrix Vapor rims and 7-speed rear freewheel came on the bike. Only parts original to the frame left were seat post, handlebars(?) and crankset.
- Planet Bike fenders and rack were free. Rear derailleur "upgraded" to Shimano TX-35, Sunrace friction shifters mounted as "brifters"
- Sunlite replacement fork and headset, '76 Schwinn Varsity stem, Continental Tour Ride 700x32c tires
- Rode surprisingly nicely and stood up to city abuse, curbs, dirt jumps, etc. Never left me walking.
- Been with me since September 2014, retired in March 2017 after drivetrain wore out (again) and seat stays started bending. I have kept the frame.

- 1977 Takara 10-speed built into a 2-speed retro-direct
- Alloy wheels and brakes from a 1986 KHS Gran Sport
- Using the 52t chain ring up front and two separate freewheels at 16 and 24 teeth
- Pedal forward for high gear, backward for low. I had it the other way initially.
- Been with me since April 2016, parted out December 2017. Parts to be used later.

2004 Ford F-150

Pictured April 2017

- Belonged to a close friend Ian's father since new. He bought a new truck and didn't want to bother posting it up for sale, and also knew that I loved the truck so offered it to me for a very low price. Surprisingly, I got the green light from my parents and we drove it home.
- 5.4-liter V8, 24v SOHC. 300 hp/365 ft-lb. Crew cab, 5.5 ft bed
- Plagued with every problem that the 5.4 3-valve could have, sold to someone who had the time to install the parts I bought
- With me from May 2017 to August 2019

Rosalynn, pictured January 2017

- Low-mileage, fairly well preserved when I bought it
- 1961 3-speed Sturmey-Archer TCW coaster brake, 46/21 gear ratio
- Kool Stop salmon rod brake pads, Schwalbe Delta Cruiser tires, KMC Z410 chain, 1973 Brooks B72 saddle, Steco cargo rack, Paris Packs canvas bags, Gyes leather grips, Sunlite frame pump painted black, bottle generator powering halogen headlight and LED Herrmans rear light with standlight
- Been with me July 2015 to January 2020

Pictured December 2019

Snagged one when they were going at a massive discount.
- Sturmey-Archer RS-RK3 3-speed hub, mechanical disc brakes and eccentric bottom bracket
- 700x47c Vredestein tires, cream to match the Superbe. Origin8 Sport Uno-S saddle.
- Copper handlebars replaced with silver Sunlite alloy bars
- Sunlite rear cargo rack
- Rear reflector moved lower, new-style Raleigh badge riveted to rear fender to imitate older Raleighs
I'm not usually a fan of new retro stuff, but they did a great job on the details here.
- Been with me from December 2017 to February 2020

Pictured December 2019

Ideal commuter bike, v2.2. Started with bare Tange chrome-moly mixte frame in near mint condition. Built up as a 3-speed for the first year of ownership, re-rebuilt May 2017

- Weinmann 650b rims,WTB Horizon, Shimano Alfine dynohub, Shimano 9 speed rear hub, DT stainless spokes
- 11-34 tooth 9 speed cassette, Shimano Acera rear derailleur, Shimano Claris 2403 front drailleur, Sugino XD 170mm cranks, 30-46t Sugino+Shimano chainrings, MRP bash guard, Nashbar Double Track pedals, SunRace bar end shifters (right side indexed), Shimano UN55 68x113 mm bottom bracket
- Nitto Technomic 70x180mm stem, Origin8 42 cm handlebars, Tektro RL340 brake levers, Schwinn Approved Weinmann LS2 brake calipers filed for more reach, Kool Stop brake pads, Sturmey-Archer stainless brake cables, Jagwire L3 shifter cables
- Brooks Cambium C17 saddle, Herrmans H-flow headlight and H-track tail light, Planet Bike Eco Rack, 1960s Falter aluminum fenders

I couldn't get the shifting to work out no matter what, and thought the frame was misaligned. Took it to a shop, they were stumped. I began planning another build with the components so I disassembled this bike and saved the frame for a future project. Later, I found out that 9-speed road shifters and mountain derailleurs are not compatible. Silly mistake.

Pictured January 2018

Tange 4130 chromoly steel frame, surprisingly light frame with heavy wheels.
- Fixed gear, 52/20 gear ratio for interchangeability with the 2-speed wheel.

- Profile quill-threadless stem adapter, Dimension 70 mm stem, Pure Fix track handlebars.
- Been with me from October 2017 to February 2020

2werkules, pictured August 2017

Raleigh product, made in England. Initially built for a friend in 2016, then returned to me in a trade.
- Sturmey-Archer S2C 2-speed kickback coaster brake hub, Sheffield 90mm front hub, 46/21 gearing
- Weinmann DP18 700c rims, Continental Ultra Sport 700x25c tires, DT Champion stainless spokes with yellow nipples
- KMC Z410 NP chain, 1970s Brooks vinyl mattress saddle, 1976 Raleigh handlebars and stem
- Been with me April 2017 to April 2020. Rebuilt and passed onto another friend as a 650b commuter bike, 700c wheels moved onto the Dunelt.

Pictured May 2017

Something cheap and simple to see if I actually like doing this. The first bike I ever purchased brand new, but repainted with Duplicolor Ford Amazon Green. Also added a Retrospec Wide Urban saddle, VP retro BMX pedals, and swan handlebar grips. With me from November 2016 to August 2019, gave it to my neighbor Kareem because I knew he'd get more use out of it.

  1. Hi Jay,

you seem to be a creative bike tinkerer.

I am wondering if I can hack the Sturmey Archer SLS 30 bar end shifters.
What I already own are Shimano 8 speed downtube shifters.

My plan is to use the Sturmey Archer bar end shifters as a mount for the Shimono downtube shifters.

Am I mistaken, if I assume that they can be swapped out just by using an alley key?
This would be the cheapest way to get bar end shifters for a monstercross built.
Do you think, it can work?

    With kind regards,

    Jörn

    1. Hi! Sorry for the late reply. I have not tried this hack yet and have not read about anyone who has. Good luck, and let me know what you find!
